False pregnancy

A state in which a woman is not pregnant but is under the influence of progesterone. In many mammals, progesterone is secreted from the corpus luteum formed after ovulation, and changes occur in the reproductive organs as if she were pregnant. This corpus luteum is called a pseudopregnant corpus luteum, and does not develop as large as a pregnant corpus luteum, and the period during which it secretes hormones is short. In humans and monkeys, this corresponds to the latter half of the menstrual cycle, when the uterine wall develops, but as the pseudopregnant corpus luteum degenerates, it falls off, causing bleeding, i.e., menstruation. In rats and mice, the corpus luteum degenerates after ovulation without secreting almost any hormones, but if mating occurs during the estrus period but pregnancy does not occur, or if the cervix is ​​experimentally stimulated electrically or mechanically, the corpus luteum develops more than normal and begins to secrete progesterone, inducing a false pregnancy. In humans, the phantom pregnancy that sometimes occurs in women who are desperate to become pregnant is also called a false pregnancy.

妊娠しないで黄体ホルモンの影響下にある状態をいう。多くの哺乳(ほにゅう)類では排卵後にできた黄体から黄体ホルモンが分泌され、あたかも妊娠しているかのような生殖付属器官の変化がおこる。この黄体を偽妊娠黄体といい妊娠黄体ほど大きく発達せず、ホルモンを分泌する期間も短い。ヒトやサルの場合は月経周期の後半がこれにあたり、子宮壁が発達するが、偽妊娠黄体の退化に伴ってそれが脱落し、出血すなわち月経を引き起こす。ラットやマウスでは排卵後の黄体はほとんどホルモンの分泌を行わず退化するが、発情期に交尾をしてしかも妊娠しなかった場合や、実験的に子宮頸管(けいかん)部を電気的にあるいは機械的に刺激してやると、黄体が普通以上に発達して黄体ホルモンを分泌するようになり、偽妊娠が誘致される。なおヒトの場合、妊娠を渇望する婦人に、ときに現れる想像妊娠を偽妊娠とよぶこともある。
