Founded around 529 by Benedict of Nursia on Monte Cassino, a mountain halfway between Rome and Naples, this monastery is one of the prototypes of European monasteries. It was destroyed by the Lombards around 581 and rebuilt by Petronax in 720, but was destroyed again by the Islamic army in 883 and by the Normans in 1046. The monastery was at its height of prosperity during the time of abbots Desiderius and Oderisius in the second half of the 11th century, when the new cathedral was built, and was also renowned for its manuscript production.
