Moses Montefiore

A British Jewish businessman. He was related to the Rothschild family by marriage, and as a member of the family he made his fortune through stock trading. During the Damascus blood libel scandal of 1840 (Jews were arrested and executed on suspicion of killing Christians and drinking their blood as sacrifices for Passover and other occasions), he worked hard to free the Jews who were being held in custody, and also met with the Tsar twice on behalf of Russian Jews. An Orthodox Jew, his robust physical strength and strong personality made him a shining star not only for Jews in Britain but for all of Europe.

イギリスのユダヤ人実業家。ロスチャイルド家と姻戚関係にあり，その一員として株取引に活躍して財をなす。1840年ダマスクスでの〈血の中傷〉事件(ユダヤ教徒が過越祭などの犠牲にキリスト教徒を殺してその血をすするという嫌疑をうけ，逮捕･処刑された事件)に際し拘留中のユダヤ教徒解放のために尽力し，またロシアのユダヤ人のために2度にわたりツァーと会談した。正統派ユダヤ教徒で，頑健な体力と強烈な個性によりイギリスばかりでなく全ヨーロッパのユダヤ人の輝ける星であった。
