During the Damascus blood libel scandal of 1840 (Jews were arrested and executed on suspicion of killing Christians and drinking their blood as sacrifices for Passover and other occasions), he worked hard to free the Jews who were being held in custody, and also met with the Tsar twice on behalf of Russian Jews. An Orthodox Jew, his robust physical strength and strong personality made him a shining star not only for Jews in Britain but for all of Europe.
