On the night of December 14, 1702 (Genroku 15), 46 men including Oishi Yoshio took the head of Kira Yoshinaka, a high-ranking official, at Honjo in Edo and avenged their lord. The group is generally known as the 47 Ronin, including Terasaka Kichiemon, who deserted during the raid. In March of the previous year, Asano Naganori, the lord of Ako Domain, was in charge of entertaining an imperial envoy, but after he attacked Yoshinaka, who was in charge of ceremonial matters for the shogunate, in Edo Castle, his estate was confiscated and he was ordered to commit seppuku on the same day. Yoshinaka was only relieved of his duties. Dissatisfied with the Shogunate's treatment of the Asano side, the retainers led by Oishi Yoshio split into two factions: the radical faction that sought to kill Yoshinaka, the sworn enemy of their fallen lord, and Oishi and others who sought to restore the Asano family's honor by establishing Naganori's younger brother Daigaku. However, after the Asano family's hopes of restoration were dashed, Oishi and others joined the radical faction and attacked Kira's residence. 元禄15年（1702年）12月14日夜，江戸本所に高家肝煎(こうけきもいり)吉良義央(きらよしなか)の首級をあげ主君の仇を討った大石良雄以下46人をいう。討入りの際に脱落した寺坂吉右衛門を加え一般に四十七士という。前年３月，赤穂藩主浅野長矩(ながのり)は，勅使下向の際の接待役となったが，幕府の儀礼担当職にあった義央を江戸城中で刃傷(にんじょう)に及んだため所領を没収され，即日切腹を命じられた。義央は御役御免のみであった。浅野側の正当性をまったく認めようとしない幕府の処置を不服とする大石良雄を首領とする家臣らは，亡君の仇敵義央を討とうとする急進派と，長矩の弟大学をたてて浅野家を再興し，名誉を回復しようとした大石らとに分れた。しかし，浅野家再興の望みがたたれた後，大石らは急進派に合流し，吉良邸に討ち入った。この事件については，室鳩巣，荻生徂徠，佐藤直方ら当時の学者の間で是非論があったが，幕府は翌1703年２月全員に切腹を命じた。→仮名手本忠臣蔵
