On the night of December 14, 1702 (Genroku 15), 46 men including Oishi Yoshio took the head of Kira Yoshinaka, a high-ranking official, at Honjo in Edo and avenged their lord. The group is generally known as the 47 Ronin, including Terasaka Kichiemon, who deserted during the raid. In March of the previous year, Asano Naganori, the lord of Ako Domain, was in charge of entertaining an imperial envoy, but after he attacked Yoshinaka, who was in charge of ceremonial matters for the shogunate, in Edo Castle, his estate was confiscated and he was ordered to commit seppuku on the same day. Yoshinaka was only relieved of his duties. Dissatisfied with the Shogunate's treatment of the Asano side, the retainers led by Oishi Yoshio split into two factions: the radical faction that sought to kill Yoshinaka, the sworn enemy of their fallen lord, and Oishi and others who sought to restore the Asano family's honor by establishing Naganori's younger brother Daigaku. However, after the Asano family's hopes of restoration were dashed, Oishi and others joined the radical faction and attacked Kira's residence. There was debate among scholars of the time, including Muro Kyusu, Ogyu Sorai, and Sato Naokata, over the merits and demerits of this incident, but the Shogunate ordered all of them to commit seppuku in February of the following year, 1703. → Kanadehon Chushingura → Related topics Ako Domain | Revenge | Fukumoto Ninami | Horibe Yasubei Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
