Taira Tadanori - Taira no Tadanori
Year of death: 1st February 7th (1184.3.20)
Year of birth: Tenyo 1 (1144)
A military commander and poet of the late Heian period. He was the son of Tadamori and the youngest brother of Kiyomori, and his mother is said to be the daughter of Fujiwara no Tametada, but the details are unknown. His highest official position was Satsuma no Kami, Junior Fourth Rank. Since the outbreak of the Genpei War, he participated as one of the great generals in battles such as the Battle of Fujigawa in 1180, the Battle of Sunomatagawa the following year, and the Battle of Tonamiyama in 1183. He was also famous as a poet, and his poems were included in imperial anthologies. There is a famous anecdote about how, when the Taira clan fled the capital in 1182, he entrusted a volume of poetry to his teacher, Fujiwara no Shunzei. One of the poems, "Sazanami ya Shiga no Miyako wa Are Nishi wo Mukashi nagara no Yama Sakura kana," appears as an anonymous author in the Senzaishu. The poem also exists today as the Taira no Tadatsugushu (Waka section of Gunsho Ruiju). In the following year, 1184, he was killed by Okabe Rokuyata Tadazumi in the Battle of Ichinotani. He was a typical Taira nobleman who was skilled in elegance despite being a military commander.
