An insect of the Lepidoptera family, Lymantriidae (illustration). Wings span 2-3cm. Generally, adults in summer are small. Both the body and wings are white. The rear half of the abdomen is orange-brown. The forewings have black markings near the bottom and rear corners, but in some individuals, they are almost completely missing. The antennae are comb-like, but the females have shorter combs. They are widely distributed from mainland Japan through the Korean Peninsula to the Eurasian continent. The larvae are black, with an orange-brown band on the back and a row of white markings on the sides of the black parts. They are pests that feed on various leaves, including those of the Rosaceae and Fagaceae families, and from the second instar onwards they produce poisonous setae that are attached to the cocoons, resulting in countless poisonous setae on the adult body.
