Reply letter - hentosho

Japanese: 返答書 - へんとうしょ

A written reply by the defendant (opponent) in civil court proceedings (deirisuji) in the Edo Shogunate. When the complaint (meyasu) is endorsed by the court (meyasu endorsement, meyasu urahan) and delivered to the other party by the plaintiff (litigant), the other party must submit a written rebuttal to the contents of the meyasu to the court. This written reply is usually submitted together with the meyasu when submitting a notice of arrival before the date of appearance (notification of departure or arrival before the date of appearance).

江戸幕府の民事裁判手続(出入筋（でいりすじ）)における被告(相手方)の答弁書。訴状(目安（めやす）)に裁判所の裏書(目安裏書，目安裏判（うらはん）)が与えられ，これが原告(訴訟人)の手によって相手方のもとに送達されると，相手方は目安の内容に対する反駁を書面に記して裁判所に提出しなければならない。この書面が返答書で，通常は〈差日（さしび）以前着届（ちやくとどけ）〉(出廷期日の前に出府，到着した旨の届出)の際に目安とともに提出する。
