Monk seal - Monk seal (English spelling)

Japanese: モンクアザラシ - もんくあざらし（英語表記）monk seal

A general term for mammals belonging to the genus Monachus in the family Phocidae (Phocidae) of the order Pinnipedia. It consists of three species: the Mediterranean monk seal, the Hawaiian monk seal, and the Caribbean monk seal. It is the only seal that lives in low-latitude waters, and is in danger of extinction and an internationally protected species. It has a brown body color, and the body length of both sexes is almost the same, ranging from 2.1 to 2.4 meters. It is so named because it has a round head, thin and relatively dense hair, and a face that looks just like a Christian monk.

鰭脚（ききやく）目アザラシ科モンクアザラシ属Monachusに属する哺乳類の総称。チチュウカイモンクアザラシ，ハワイモンクアザラシ，カリブカイモンクアザラシの3種からなる。低緯度海域に生息する唯一のアザラシで，絶滅の危機にあり，国際保護動物になっている。茶褐色の体色をし，体長は雌雄ほぼ等しく，2.1～2.4mである。頭が丸く，毛が細く比較的密生しその顔つきがちょうどキリスト教の修道士monkのようなところからこう呼ばれる。
