...The Association of Contemporary Music (ASM), a group of academic musicians, and the Association of Proletarian Musicians of Russia (RAPM), a group of communists, were in conflict, with one side claiming that modernist music was the music of the new era, while the other side rejected all traditional music and aimed to build a completely new music by the revolutionary proletariat. Few works from this period have survived to the present day, but some of them include Aleksandr Vasil'evich Mosolov's (1900-73) Ironworks (1926), which attracted attention as a constructivist orchestral piece, the young Shostakovich's brilliant First Symphony (1925), and the oratorio October Road (1927) by eight young composers who attempted a new method of composition through collaborative composition. By a decision of the Central Committee of the Communist Party dated April 23, 1932, these groups were dissolved and all musicians were united in the Union of Composers as the sole organization.
