Around 1303 - 73 Swedish saint. Canonized in 1391, her feast day is October 8th. After the death of her husband (1344), with whom she made a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Spain, she began to fully engage in religious experiences she had had since her childhood and the activities inspired by them. She considered herself an instrument of God and the bride of Christ, and domestically she fiercely attacked the extravagance of the court and the knightly class, and the secularization of the clergy, and internationally she strongly lobbied for the return of the Pope from Avignon to Rome. She stayed in Rome from 1350 onwards. Twenty years later she received permission from Pope Urban V to found her own coeducational monastery in Västena in southern Sweden.
