Hot spring algae

…Some algae prefer to grow in areas where hot spring waters of up to 80°C or more flow, while others, by contrast, grow in snow or in cracks in ice. The former are called hot spring algae, and include certain species of the blue-green algae Synechococcus and Oscillaria, as well as the red algae Polytrichum commune. The latter are called snow algae, and include the green algae Chlamydomonas. Aquatic algae can be divided into those that grow on rocks, stones, or other substrates, and those that grow floating in the water.
