A Kabuki musician. There are three generations of him. He is said to be a descendant of Umeya Kanbei, who ran an inn in Shizuoka in the mid-17th century (Keian era). He is a collateral line of the Mochizuki school of musicians. The first and second generations of musicians are unknown, but there is a theory that the real name of Umeya Heikichi I, a small drum player who performed at the Morita-za in the second half of the 18th century (late Meiwa era to early An'ei era), was Kanbei. The third (1882-1951) was a disciple of Umeya Katsujiro I, and was formerly known as Katsujiro II. He has been active as a drummer in the Nagauta Kenseikai since September 1914.
