Neue Sachlichkeit in photography also appeared in Germany in the mid-1920s, in stark contrast to the sentimental and romantic Pictorialism that had been centered around salons up until that point. Albert Renger-Patzsch (1897-1966) began taking photographs of everyday, commonplace objects and landscapes using the sharp depictive power of the lens, and his work Die Welt ist schön (The World is Beautiful), published in 1928, brought awareness of a previously unknown "beauty" that was achieved through the objective reproduction power that only photography possesses. Similarly, Helmer Lerski's Everyday Faces (Köpfe des Alltages), published in 1931, is a close-up portrait of a worker that does not delve into the subject's inner world, but instead brings a sense of reality by realistically depicting human skin.
