A general term for the genus Gloriosa in the Liliaceae family. Five species are found in Africa and tropical Asia. The leaves are stalkless and grow opposite or in a whorl of three. The tips of the leaves grow thread-like and tendrils around the plant. The flowers have six tepals that curl back as they bloom, and six stamens. The style grows almost at a right angle to the ovary, and the stigma has three lobes. The English name "climbing lily" comes from the climbing habit. The Japanese name is "kitsune yuri" (fox lily) because of the flower shape. The most commonly cultivated species is Gloriosa Rothschildiana , with red and yellow tepals about 10 cm long. It is popular as a cut flower and is also used for potted plants. The pale yellow, single-colored variety G. superba `Lutea' is also sold as a cut flower. The bulbs are planted in soil containing a lot of organic matter in April and May, and grown in a sunny place. When the leaves turn yellow in autumn, the bulbs are dug up and stored until the following spring.

ユリ科グロリオサ属の総称。アフリカと熱帯アジアに5種が分布する。葉は柄がなく対生または3輪生。葉の先端部が糸状に伸びて，巻きひげのように周囲にからみつく性質がある。花は6花被片が開花とともにそり返り，おしべも6本。子房に対して花柱がほぼ直角に伸び，柱頭は3裂する。英名のクライミング・リリーは，はい上るように伸びる性質による。花形から和名はキツネユリという。最もよく栽培されるのはグロリオサ・ロスチャイルディアナ G.rothschildianaで，長さ約 10cmの花被片が赤色と黄色の複色になる。切り花として人気が高く，鉢植えにも利用される。淡黄色の単色品種である`ルテア'G.superba　`Lutea'も切り花で流通する。4～5月頃，有機質を多く含む用土に球根を植付け，よく日の当るところで育てる。秋に葉が黄変したら，球根を掘上げて翌春まで貯蔵する。
