A city in central Osaka Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1946. It is located on the left bank of the downstream Yodo River and borders Osaka City. The city center developed as a post town on the Kyoto Highway in the early modern period, and after the opening of the Keihan Electric Railway in 1910, it developed as an extension of Osaka's eastern industrial zone. Since 1958, factories have been attracted to the city, and there are now factories for electrical equipment, textiles, food processing, and more. Following Osaka City, it has become increasingly urbanized. Production of the city's specialty Moriguchi radishes and lotus roots has almost completely disappeared. The city is served by the Osaka Municipal Subway Tanimachi Line, Imazatosuji Line, Hanshin Expressway, and Kinki Expressway. Area: 12.71 km2 . Population: 146,697 (2010).
