In his two volumes of The Life of Jesus (1835-36), Strauss attempted a critical study of the Bible, pointing out that the deeds of Jesus Christ recorded in the Gospels are not historical facts, but are myths that the early Christian church created unconsciously, and developed a unique theory of Christianity that inherited Hegel's religious philosophy. He distinguished between historical facts and faith truths, and claimed that his theory did not in any way damage faith truths, but he was subjected to fierce criticism not only from orthodox theologians but also from the Hegelian school. …
