Morin, Jean
[Born] 1591. Blois
Died: February 28, 1659. Paris. French theologian. One of the historical theologians. Latin name Johannes Morinus. Born into a Calvinist family, he studied classical languages in Rochelle and Leiden, then moved to Paris and converted to Roman Catholicism. In 1618 he became an Oratorian, and thereafter devoted himself almost entirely to ancient theology and textual criticism of the Bible. Histoire de la délivrance del'église chrétienne par l'empereur Constantin (1630) (Histoire de la délivrance del'église chrétienne par l'empereur Constantin) angered Rome, and his work on the sacrament of penance angered both the Jesuits and the Port-Royal camps. In his biblical studies, he denied the integrity of the Hebrew Scriptures, sparking a fierce debate that continued until his death. His Samaritan translations of the Pentateuch and the Targum, compiled in the Paris Polyglot Bible in 1645, were pioneers in this field of research.
