It is an evergreen climbing shrub of the Bignoniaceae family. Its leaves are opposite, with the leaflets at the top forming long, thin whiskers that grow around other objects. Its flowers are funnel-shaped and grow in axillary or terminal panicles. Eight species are found in South America, and it is sometimes included in the Bignonia genus.
