This former town occupies the northern part of Amakusa Shimoshima in Amakusa County, Kumamoto Prefecture. The traditional wooden shipbuilding industry is thriving in the central settlement of Goryo facing the Hayasaki Strait, and diving fishing is practiced in Futae. Processing of stone for building use and shipbuilding are also carried out. A ferryboat runs between Kuchinotsu on the Shimabara Peninsula and Oniike Port. In March 2006, Amakusa merged with Hondo City, Ushibuka City, and the towns of Ariake, Goshoura, Kuratake, Sumimoto, Shinwa, Amakusa, and Kawaura in Amakusa County to become a city. Area: 50.05 km2 . 熊本県天草郡,天草下島北部を占める旧町。早崎瀬戸に面する中心集落御領(ごりょう)では伝統的な木造船業が盛んで,二江(ふたえ)ではもぐり漁業が行われる。建築用石材の間知石(けんちいし)加工,造船業も行われる。島原半島口之津と鬼池港間にフェリーボートが就航。2006年3月,本渡市,牛深市,天草郡有明町,御所浦町,倉岳町,栖本町,新和町,天草町,河浦町と合併し市制,天草市となる。50.05km2。1万755人(2003)。
