Cotton
〘Noun〙① A deciduous tall tree of the Bombacaceae family. Native to the tropical regions from India to Taiwan. It is rarely cultivated in tropical regions to obtain seed hair fiber, and is also cultivated in greenhouses in temperate regions for ornamental purposes. It reaches a height of about 30 meters. The leaves are palmately compound with long stalks and three to seven leaflets. Each leaflet has a short stalk, is oblong, and about 15 cm long. In spring, the ends of the branches bear numerous clusters of orange-red, deep crimson, or white five-petaled flowers, each about 10 cm long. The fruits are oblong and about 15 cm long. The seeds have fluff and are used in the same way as kapok. The wood is white and light, and is used for dugout canoes and tea boxes, and the roots are used as a tonic. It is sometimes called bread tree, and can also refer to kapok, which belongs to the same family. Japanese laurel. Cotton tree. Kiwatanoki. Kinowata. ゆう ゆふ【木綿】

〘名〙 楮(こうぞ)の樹皮をはぎ、その繊維を蒸して水にさらし、細かにさいて糸としたもの。幣(ぬさ)として神事や祭のときに榊(さかき)にかけて垂らす。真木綿(まゆう)。※万葉(8C後)三・四四三「斎瓮(いはひへ)を 前にすゑ置きて 片手には 木綿(ゆふ)取り持ち 片手には 和栲(にきたえ)奉り」

もん‐めん【木綿】

〘名〙 =もめん(木綿)※大乗院寺社雑事記‐応仁二年(1468)一〇月一九日「布座申分は、もんめん者衣服類也。布と同篇也」
