Samrong Sen
A prehistoric shell midden site in Cambodia. It is located on a low hill overlooking the alluvial plain, on the right bank of the Storn Kinit River, southeast of Lake Tonlé Sap. It was discovered in 1876, and excavations were conducted and reported by H. Mansuy of the Ecole franco-oriental in 1901 and 1923. The shell layer is made up entirely of freshwater shellfish such as corbiculas and pond snails, and is divided into three layers, reaching a thickness of 6m in some parts. Excavated artifacts include pottery, stone tools, and bone and horn tools, as well as animal and human bones and ornaments. The stone tools include stone axes, including shouldered stone axes, and chisels, while the bone and horn tools mainly include arrowheads, harpoons, and fishhooks.The pottery comes in a variety of shapes, including jars, bowls, and tall cups, and the patterns include geometric designs applied using a variety of techniques, as well as plain pottery and rope mat patterns created by beating the potter with a board wrapped in rope, but pottery wheels were not used.

カンボジアの先史時代の貝塚遺跡。トンレ・サップ湖の南東,ストルン・キニト川右岸の,沖積平野を望む低い丘に位置する。1876年に発見され,1901年と23年にフランス極東学院のマンシュイH.Mansuyが発掘調査を行い報告している。貝層はシジミやタニシなど淡水産の貝のみで形成され,3層に分かれていて厚い部分では6mに達する。出土遺物としては土器,石器,骨角器のほか,獣骨,人骨,装身具などがある。石器としては有肩石斧を含む石斧や鑿(のみ)の類,骨角器では鏃,銛,釣針の類が主で,土器には壺,鉢,高杯などの器形があり,文様もさまざまな施文法による幾何学文のほか,無文土器や縄を巻きつけた板でたたいて整形した縄蓆(じようせき)文のものもあるが,ろくろは使用していない。
