1661‐1700 King of Spain. Reigned 1665-1700. He was the last king of the Spanish Habsburg dynasty, and during his reign Spain suffered both domestic and foreign collapses, and its decline became decisive. He ascended to the throne at the age of four, but was ill and completely incompetent to govern. During the first ten years of his reign, a fierce power struggle unfolded between his mother, Queen Mariana of Austria, who served as regent, her confessor Nitart, her favorite Valenzuela, and Juan José of Austria, the illegitimate son of his father, King Philip III, and many other people, and various conspiracies were swirling around the court.
