1843‐96 Qajar bureaucrat and historian. He is commonly known as E'ṭemād al‐Salṭane. In 1851, at the age of nine, he joined the first class of the Darol-Fonun Army. In 1863-64, he was posted as a military attaché at the Iranian embassy in Paris, where he stayed for four years. In 1867-68, he returned to Iran and became a French interpreter for Naser al-Din Shah, accompanying the Shah on all three of his visits to Europe (1873, 1877, 1889). His greatest achievements lie not so much as an official, but in the cultural work he carried out as a historian during his 25-year tenure as publishing director and minister (1872-96).
