[1] 〘名〙① 川の東方。※本朝無題詩（1162‐64頃）一〇・山寺即事〈藤原忠通〉「河東有_レ寺訪_二其源_一、祖考幽栖昔相門」② 「かとうぶし（河東節）」の略。※談義本・当世下手談義（1752）五「近世の河東(カトウ)は、中にも上品の至り浄留理。和して都の優美に恥ず」[2][一] 江戸で隅田川の東側、本所、深川を、京都で鴨川の東側、祇園をさす。※園太暦‐貞和三年（1347）八月八日「新日吉社造営料足事、宛_二課洛中河東酒屋_一、可_レ終_二其功_一之由」[二] とくに、江戸深川の遊郭をさしていう。※洒落本・文選臥坐（1790）目「河東(カトウ)（〈注〉フカガハ）の艷詞」[三] 河東節の創始者、十寸見河東(ますみかとう)。また、初代以後、代々の家元の芸名。[四] 中国の黄河東岸地方の通称。主に山西省西南部をさす。中国語ではホートン。[五] 北海道の中南部、十勝支庁の郡。十勝川上流東岸にある。明治二年（一八六九）十勝国の一郡として成立。
