In recent years, Near Eastern archaeology has provided many groundbreaking results regarding the mythology of the Syrian-Canaanic region, centering on research into the Ugaritic society that gave birth to it. The first light was shed on the mythology of this region, which had been buried under sand for a long time, by the tip of a Syrian farmer's hoe when he happened to be plowing a field. This was in the spring of 1928. The following year, an excavation team of French archaeologists was organized, and just over a month after trial excavations began, they succeeded in unearthing a magnificent group of ruins that spread across Ras Shamra, about one kilometer up the mountain from the coast.

近年のオリエント考古学は，シリア･カナン地域の神話について，それを生みだしたウガリト社会の研究を中心に，多くの画期的成果を提供している。長い間，砂に埋もれていたこの地域の神話に，最初の光が当てられたのは，たまたま畑を耕していたシリアの農夫の鋤の先からであった。1928年の春のことである。翌年フランス人考古学者による発掘隊が編成され，試掘開始後1ヵ月余で，海岸から1kmほど山手の〈ういきょうの丘(ラス･シャムラ)〉に広がる壮大な遺跡群を掘り当てることに成功したのである。
