A general term for songs used at official Imperial Court ceremonies, such as New Year's Day, Aouma, Toga, and other festivals, as well as the Daijoe and Niiname Festivals. This term is the opposite to kouta (folk songs) sung by the general public. Daiuta were selected from the folk songs and folk songs that had been handed down since ancient times, and those with a refined style were chosen. Most of the songs included in the Kojiki and Nihonshoki with the titles and other information are recognized as the first wave of daiuta, and the Ooutadokoro no Miuta, Kamiasobi no Uta, and Azuma Uta in Volume 20 of the Kokin Wakashu are thought to be based on the outline of the second wave of daiuta. All of these are thought to have been taught at the Daiutadokoro. The Daiutasho poems are further divided into the Oonaobi poem, the Yamatomai dance poem, the Omi-buri, the Mizukuki-buri, and the Shihatsuyama-buri, but the Oonaobi poem, which retains the ancient form, goes as follows: "Hidden at the beginning of the new year is the way to accumulate joy for a thousand years."
