A style of dance that was born out of a completely new approach in reaction to classical ballet techniques (danse classica). Founded by I. Duncan, it was established in Germany in the 1920s and later developed in the United States. The term "modern dance" was coined in 1933 by American critic John Martin, who defined it as a general term for Duncan's free dance (also called new dance), the Neue Tanz (later called Moderne Tanz) of Germany's M. Wigman and others, and the dance of M. Graham and others in the United States. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
I. ウィグマンらのノイエ・タンツNeue‐Tanz(のちにモデルネ・タンツといわれた)やアメリカのM.
