…in Greek legend, son of Athenian king Theseus and Amazon queen Hippolytus. Hippolytus, who worshipped the virgin goddess Artemis and spent his days hunting, rejected the wicked love of Phaidra, daughter of King Minos of Crete and his father's second wife. However, he committed suicide after writing a letter falsely claiming that she had been raped by her stepson. Hippolytus was cursed by his father and banished from the country.
