Modern Times

Japanese: モダン･タイムス（英語表記）Modern Times

An American film made in 1936. Produced, written, directed, and starring Charles Chaplin. Made between City Lights (1931) and The Great Dictator (1940), Chaplin sings meaningless lyrics without any dialogue, and the only sound we can hear is his voice. It is a part-talkie film with music (also composed by Chaplin) and sound, and is an important work in the transition of Chaplin's art from silent to talkie. At the beginning, a subtitle appears that reads, "Modern Times is the story of industrial society and the efforts of individuals within it - the struggle of human beings in pursuit of happiness."

1936年製作のアメリカ映画。チャールズ･チャップリン製作･脚本･監督･主演。《街の灯》(1931)と《チャップリンの独裁者》(1940)の間につくられた作品で，チャップリンはせりふなしで意味不明の歌詞を歌って声のみ聞かせる。音楽(作曲もチャップリン)とサウンド入りのパート･トーキー作品で，〈チャップリン芸術〉がサイレントからトーキーへ移行するはざまの重要な作品である。　冒頭に〈モダン･タイムスとは産業社会とその中での個人の努力――幸福を追いもとめて戦う人間の物語である〉という字幕が出る。
