Hinomisaki

A cape in Taisha Town, Izumo City, eastern Shimane Prefecture. It is an uplifted marine platform at the westernmost point of the Shimane Peninsula, jutting out into the Sea of Japan. The geology is quartz trachyte. At the tip of the cape is Hinomisaki Lighthouse, erected in 1903 (Meiji 36). The top of the structure is 43.65 meters above ground, and its light can reach a distance of about 40 kilometers. In 1998 (Heisei 10), it was selected as one of the "100 Best Historic Lighthouses in the World." To the south of the lighthouse is Hinomisaki Shrine and the town surrounding it. The coast in the vicinity is a ria type with a variety of terrain, and is included in Daisen-Oki National Park, as well as Shimane Peninsula Marine Park. Fumishima Island, located in the western part of the cape, is a breeding ground for black-tailed gulls and is designated as a national natural monument.
