Born: December 29, 1921, Velika Drenova, Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes
[Died] May 18, 2014. Belgrade, Serbia. Serbian writer and politician. He studied at an agricultural school and during World War II he was active with the communist forces of the former Yugoslavia, known as the Partisans. He later joined the former Yugoslav government, but was expelled from politics in 1968. He returned to politics in the 1990s and was elected the first president of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in June 1992. However, he came into conflict with extremist Serbian nationalism and was dismissed within a year. As a writer, he wrote novels such as "Daleko je sunce" (1951) and "Deobe" (1961), which portrayed the Serbian resistance during World War II and the situation at that time. Other works include the novel "Vreme smrti" (1972-79), set during World War I, and its sequel trilogy "Vreme zla" (1990). (→ History of Yugoslavia, Yugoslav literature)
