Japanese: モグリガ(潜蛾) - モグリガ

Some moth larvae burrow into the leaves, fruits, stems, branches, trunks or roots of plants; these are collectively called mining moths. All leaf mining moths are tiny species whose larvae live inside a leaf and feed on part of its tissue before developing into pupae. The feeding marks vary from species to species, and can be serpentine, coiled or spotted. Most species in the families Nepticulidae, Heliozelidae, Tischeriidae, Bucculatrigidae, Lyonetiidae, Gracilariidae and Phyllocnistidae are leaf mining moths.

ガの幼虫のなかには，植物の葉，果実，茎，枝，幹あるいは根に潜るものがあって，これらを総称してモグリガと呼ぶ。　潜葉性のガ(英名leaf mining moth)はすべて微小な種類で，幼虫は1枚の葉の内部にすんでその組織の一部を食べてさなぎにまで成長する。種ごとに食痕は異なり，蛇行状，コイル状あるいは斑状となる。モグリチビガ科Nepticulidae，ツヤコガ科Heliozelidae，ムモンハモグリガ科Tischeriidae，チビガ科Bucculatrigidae，ハモグリガ科Lyonetiidae，ホソガ科Gracillariidae，コハモグリガ科Phyllocnistidaeの諸科に属する大部分の種が潜葉性である。
