The Tipitapa River flows into the lake from Lake Managua in the northwest, and flows into the Caribbean Sea from the southeast via the San Juan River, which flows along the border with Costa Rica. There are many islands in the lake, and the largest, Ometepe Island, has two large volcanoes.
