Weevil (elephant beetle) - Weevil

Japanese: ゾウムシ(象虫) - ゾウムシ

A general term for insects in the family Curculionidae in the order Curculionidae. However, in addition to the Curculionidae, other families such as the Homonidae, the Alaridae, and the Trichosanthes are all commonly referred to as weevils because they all have a long, thin head that protrudes forward in front of the eyes and forms a proboscis. The name weevil comes from the likeness of the proboscis to an elephant's trunk, and the English name for the Curculionidae is snout beetle (they are also called weevil).

甲虫目ゾウムシ科Curculionidaeの昆虫の総称。しかし，ゾウムシ科のほかヒゲナガゾウムシ科，オトシブミ科，ミツギリゾウムシ科などは，いずれも頭部が眼の前方で細長く前方へ突出して口吻（こうふん）をなしているため，これらを含めて俗にゾウムシと呼ぶことがある。ゾウムシの名は口吻をゾウの鼻に見たててつけられたもので，ゾウムシ科の英名もsnout beetleとつけられている(そのほかweevilとも呼ばれる)。
