Markos; Mark

Markos; Mark
Saint. Active around the 1st century. Considered the author of the Gospel of Mark in the New Testament. He is thought to be the same person as "John, who is called Mark" (Acts 12:12). Cousin of Barnabas. Interpreter and secretary of the Apostle Peter (1 Peter 5:13), fellow worker of the Apostle Paul (Philemon 24). He accompanied Paul on his first missionary journey to Perga in Pamphylia, but returned to Jerusalem from there (Acts 13:13). However, because of this return, he was not included in Paul's second missionary journey, and traveled to Cyprus with Barnabas, who opposed Paul's policy (Acts 15:36-40). Later, he was mentioned as a useful person, likely having been forgiven by Paul (2 Timothy 4:11). Whether Mark had any direct contact with Jesus' life is alluded to in Mark 14:51-52, but it is merely speculation. His mother Mary's house in Jerusalem is said to have been a place where believers met for prayer. According to a legend from the late 4th century, he founded a church in Alexandria and died there.
