Uejima Onitsura

Japanese:
Uejima Onitsura
Born in 1661 (Kanbun 1). Settsu, Itami
[Died] August 2, 1738. A haiku poet from Osaka in the mid-Edo period. His given name was Munechika. He was commonly known as Yosōbei. He was also known by other names such as Tenya, Inu Koji, Satoe, and Kinka-ō. In his later years, he referred to himself as a member of the Hiraizumi clan. He was the son of Muneharu, a member of the Aburaya sake brewery in Itami. Itami was a city of sake, and literature and refinement were thriving. At the age of eight, Oninuki wrote the poem "Come, come, but the fireflies fly away." He admired Matsue Shigeyori and Nishiyama Soin, and went to Osaka to study. In 1685, he realized that "there is no haiku other than sincerity," and in 1690, he reached the pinnacle of his craft with his work "Daigo Monogurui." In 1718, he showed a remarkable view of haiku in "Soligoto" (Hitorigoto), but his views declined after that. He is valuable in that he opened his eyes to true poetry around the same time as Basho. His style of haiku is straightforward, making full use of colloquial language. His other works include "Inu Koji" (1690) and "Bukkuge Nanakuruma" (1728).
