…In Europe and the US, the starting age for school is often 6 years old, but the UK is an exception, adopting the age of 5 for starting school (infant school).

This concept was used mainly in Germany after World War II to address the issue of whether or not school-age children have reached the psychological and physiological maturity required for school education. This concept was proposed in conjunction with the idea that a major cause of failure during compulsory education is entering school at an early age.
