National Salvation Army (English name: Cuu Quoc Quan)

Japanese: 救国軍 - きゅうこくぐん（英語表記）Cuu Quoc Quan

A Communist armed organization in the mountainous region of northern Vietnam. Its predecessor was the Bac Son Guerrilla Unit (20 men as of December 1940), which was organized during the Bac Son Uprising in September 1940. In February 1941, the guerrilla unit was reorganized into the National Salvation Army in accordance with a decision by the Communist Party Central Committee. While enduring repeated suppression operations by the French Indochina government forces, the unit expanded its area of operation, forming a second company (40 men) in September 1941 and a third company (30 men) in February 1944. The de facto leader was Chu Van Thanh, a mountain tribe, but the party sent leading cadres from the central government and established a party organization within the military in an effort to gain control.
