A province of the Roman Empire. The area stretched from the lower Danube to the Balkan Mountains, which is now Romania and Bulgaria. It became part of the Roman province of Macedonia around 30 BC, but later became a separate province. Around 86 AD, Emperor Domitian divided it into two provinces (Upper and Lower Moesia). After the campaigns of Emperor Trajan, the area expanded north of the Danube, and five legions were established there. It prospered by supplying Rome with grains and fruits from the Black Sea coast and minerals from the Balkan Mountains. The inhabitants had strong Greek elements. It was invaded by barbarians from the mid-3rd century, but remained a Roman province until the 7th century (it became a Byzantine province from the beginning of the 5th century).
