...It belongs to Toshima Village, Kagoshima County. Mount Ontake (799m) in the center of the island is known as a typical active volcano with Strombolian eruptions, and it emits smoke intermittently, sometimes reaching heights of over 1000m. After a major eruption in 1813 (Bunka 10), the island's inhabitants fled, and it became uninhabited thereafter, but in 1883, settlers moved in from Amami Oshima.
