The name of a region in China. It is derived from the name of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China established during the Yuan Dynasty, and its jurisdiction roughly corresponds to the present-day provinces of Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong, and Guizhou, as well as the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. During the Ming Dynasty, the region was divided into four provinces: Huguang, Guangdong, Guangxi, and Guizhou, and the name Huguang came to refer to the area of the present-day Hubei and Hunan provinces. During the Yongzheng period of the Qing Dynasty (1723-35), Huguang was divided into two provinces, Hubei and Hunan, but the Governor of Lianghu, who had jurisdiction over these two provinces, was still often called Governor Huguang.
