A politician in the early Kamakura period. He was known by the names Matsudono, Bodaiin, and Nakayama. His Buddhist name was Zenkan. His father was Tadamichi and his mother was Toshiko, daughter of Minamoto no Kuninobu. In 1166 (Jin'an 1), he became regent after his elder brother Konoe Motozane. In 1179 (Jisho 3), Taira no Kiyomori confined Emperor Goshirakawa, suspended Motofusa as regent, and exiled him to Bizen (Okayama Prefecture). Motofusa became a monk, and after being recalled the following year, he opposed Konoe Motomichi and Kujo Kanezane, and with the help of Minamoto no Yoshinaka, who had driven out the Taira clan and entered Kyoto, he appointed his son Moroie as regent. However, with Yoshinaka's downfall, Moroie was also ousted, and thereafter he was placed outside the scope of the position of regent for the Matsudono family. He died on December 28, 2nd year of Kanki. Motofusa was knowledgeable about court ceremonies, and was highly esteemed by the Imperial Court as a leader of court officials. His most notable achievement is said to be when he was asked to provide an explanation for the "Annual Events Picture Scroll" created by Emperor Goshirakawa.
