This pottery is named after the place name of the Menda region in Kuma County, Kumamoto Prefecture, and dates from the end of the middle Yayoi period to the early Kofun period. Around 1918, when the fields around Gengayashiki (the Honme ruins) in Honme, Menda Town were demolished to turn them into rice paddies, several dozen to over 100 pieces of intact pottery were discovered. Many of the long-necked jars had a double-arc pattern painted on the body, so they were called double-arc pattern pottery. Two pieces of pottery, a long-necked jar with a sawtooth pattern and a gourd-shaped piece, discovered at Gengayashiki in 1937, have been designated Important Cultural Properties.
