A biennial alpine plant of the Gentianaceae family endemic to Japan. Stems are 5-40cm tall. Stem leaves are broadly elliptical-ovate to lanceolate, 2-7cm long. In August and September, a single flower usually blooms at the end of a stem or branch. The corolla is 2.5-3.8cm long, white, and divided into four lobes, each with a slight bluish tinge, and the edge is lobed into clusters. It is found mainly in the Hakuba mountain range, which is why it is also known as white gentian. In the Southern Alps, there is a variety called akaisiensis var. akaisiensis Yamazaki, with blue-purple corolla lobes. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
