A biennial alpine plant of the Gentianaceae family endemic to Japan. Stems are 5-40cm tall. Stem leaves are broadly elliptical-ovate to lanceolate, 2-7cm long. In August and September, a single flower usually blooms at the end of a stem or branch. The corolla is 2.5-3.8cm long, white, and divided into four lobes, each with a slight bluish tinge, and the edge is lobed into clusters. It is found mainly in the Hakuba mountain range, which is why it is also known as white gentian. In the Southern Alps, there is a variety called akaisiensis var. akaisiensis Yamazaki, with blue-purple corolla lobes.

日本特産のリンドウ科の一･二年生高山植物。茎の高さ5～40cm。茎葉は広楕円状卵形から披針形で，長さ2～7cm。8～9月に，茎や枝の先端に花を通常1個つける。花冠は長さ2.5～3.8cm，白色で4裂し，裂片はわずかに青みを帯び，へりは房状に裂ける。分布は白馬山系が中心で，そのためシロウマリンドウの別名がある。南アルプスには花冠裂片が青紫色の変種アカイシリンドウvar.akaisiensis Yamazakiがある。
