A state in which immune responsiveness is specifically reduced. In general, the body does not display an immune response to self-antigens. This state is called self-tolerance or natural tolerance. It is also possible to specifically reduce immune responses to foreign antigens (protein antigens and isogeneic histocompatibility antigens) using a variety of methods. This state is called acquired tolerance. FM Barnett believed that specific lymphocytes that come into contact with self-antigens during the fetal and neonatal periods disappear, and natural tolerance is established.
