An insect of the family Curculionidae (illustration) in the order Coleoptera. Together with the granaria weevil, they are known as grain weevils and are major pests of cereals that are distributed widely around the world. They feed on the seeds of grasses such as rice, wheat, barley, and corn, as well as dried and processed foods such as dried potatoes, buckwheat, and biscuits. Adults are reddish brown to blackish brown with four reddish yellow stripes on their forewings. Body length is about 3.5 mm. Adults are active from late March to late October. 甲虫目オサゾウムシ科の昆虫(イラスト)。グラナリアコクゾウムシとともにgrain weevilと呼ばれ,世界に広く分布する穀類の大害虫。イネ,コムギ,オオムギ,トウモロコシなどのイネ科植物の種子をはじめ,干しイモ,ソバ,ビスケットなどの乾燥・加工食品も食害する。成虫は赤褐色から黒褐色で上翅に赤黄色の4紋がある。体長3.5mm内外。成虫は3月下旬~10月下旬ごろまで活動する。1年間に3~4回発生するが,東北地方や北海道では1~2回の発生。
