An island in the Gulf of Carpentaria, north of the Northern Territory, Australia. Area: 2,630 km2, population: 2,059 (1976). Part of the Arnhem Land Aboriginal Area. The main city is Alyangula (population: 988). It has the country's largest open-cut manganese mine, and mining began in 1966 after long negotiations with the aboriginal people. Production volume: 1.58 million tons (1977). Approximately 80% is exported. The island's name means "big island" and was given by AJ Tasman in 1644.
