Hainan New Journal

...A daily newspaper published in Kochi before World War II by the Liberal Party and later the Seiyukai Party. It was founded in 1877 after the merger and title change of the Kainan Shinshi and Doyo Zasshi. It ceased publication in April 1878, but in 1880, the second Doyo Shimbun was launched on December 14, 1881 as a replacement newspaper for the Risshisha newspaper Kochi Shimbun (second edition).

...By addressing the deep dissatisfaction of the people with the government's policy of enriching the country and strengthening the military, this marked a turning point in the development of the civil rights movement into a national movement. In the same year, the group began holding public political speeches in Kochi Prefecture and also published its journals, Hainan Shinshi and Doyo Zasshi. In April of the following year, 1878, it decided to revive the Aikokusha and sent out campaigners to various parts of western Japan, achieving its revival in September. ...
