A passerine bird of the Emberizidae family. It is slightly larger than a sparrow, with a total length of about 16 cm. Sexes are heterochromatic. The male (illustration) has a black head, throat and upper chest, and a white nape. When males confront each other, they ruffle the white feathers, giving the appearance of a scarf. The back is brown with black stripes, and the belly is whitish. The female (illustration) also has a brown head and yellowish-brown eyebrows. In winter plumage, males resemble the female. It is widely distributed in the mid-latitudes of Eurasia. In Japan, it breeds in Hokkaido, but many migrate from the north as winter birds.
