William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne

British politician. 2nd Viscount Melbourne, real name William Lamb. He became a member of the House of Commons in 1806 and belonged to the Whig Party (British). In 1827, he became Secretary of State for Ireland in the Canning government, but resigned the following year in 1828 when Wellington organized a Tory government. In the same year, he became 2nd Viscount Melbourne upon the death of his father. In November 1830, he became Home Secretary in the Whig Grey government, and was a conservative in the cabinet, suppressing the radical popular movement demanding reform of the electoral law. In 1834, he was appointed as Grey's successor when Grey resigned, but was dismissed at the end of the same year due to a conflict with King William IV. In the general election the following year, 1835, he won a majority in the House of Commons, formed a cabinet again, and passed the Municipal Corporations Act and other bills. After Queen Victoria ascended to the throne in 1837, he played an important role as her political advisor until she resigned as Prime Minister in 1841.

イギリスの政治家。第2代メルバーン子爵、本名はウィリアム・ラム。1806年に下院議員となりホイッグ党（イギリス）に属す。1827年カニング政権のアイルランド担当相となったが、翌1828年ウェリントンがトーリー党内閣を組織したのちに辞任。同年、父の死によって第2代メルバーン子爵となった。1830年11月、ホイッグ党グレー内閣の内相に就任、内閣では保守派に属し、選挙法改正を要求する過激な民衆運動を抑えた。1834年には辞任したグレーの後継者に任じられ、同年末、国王ウィリアム4世と対立して更迭された。翌1835年の総選挙で下院の多数を得ると再度内閣を組織し、都市自治体法などを成立させた。1837年にビクトリア女王が即位して以後は、1841年の首相辞任まで女王の政治的助言者として重要な役割を担った。
